- At the end of every exhalation and inhalation, your body experiences a natural pause called an apnea, from the Greek words a (without) and pnein (breathing). This is a state of bodily equilibrium, when all your breathing structures relax. Bring your attention to your breathing, and detect these natural pauses. Can you elongate them, without straining your breath? There's a distinct quality of peaceful awareness to these pauses. See if you can find this stillness, and leave your mind there as you continue breathing normally.
