- In the East there's a traditional belief that the world rests on a tortoise's back - which no doubt most Westerners would find bizarre. The beliefs of other cultures may seem self-evidently wrong to you, but in the realm of faith there are few certainties. Freedom of speech and freedom of belief go hand in hand. So whatever you feel about other people's religious or metaphysical views, respect their right to hold them - which doesn't mean, of course, that you need to accept the ways in which fundamentalism (which can be found in any religion) can undermine precious rights and freedoms.

- Practice metta (lovingkindness) by saying: May I be filled with lovingkindness. May I be well. May I be peaceful and at ease. May I be happy. Repeat for others you know.
