A Commonplace Book

Category: atmosphere and air...

  • the atmospheres of the different planets
  • Earth's atmosphere is a mixture of gases, primarily nitrogen and oxygen, commonly called air
  • the composition of the atmosphere encodes a great deal of information about its origin
  • the blanket -- colorless, tasteless, odorless -- of air about 440 miles deep, surrounding the Earth protecting us from the dangerous rays of the Sun and from the cold of outer space
  • homosphere and heterosphere, troposhere, stratosphere, mesosphere, exosphere, and ionosphere
  • helping to protect the ozone layer
  • the beauty of the oxygen cycle -- gases continuously circulating between the atmosphere and living things -- making it possible for us to live here
  • the weight of all the air above pushing down on us
  • the atmosphere is colorless, tasteless, and odorless
  • Earth is sometimes called the Goldilocks planet because the conditions are like Baby Bear's porridge - just right!
  • If the air is cold it sinks, pushing down to create a higher pressure on Earth. As the air is squashed, it warms - usually bringing nice weather. If the air is warm, it rises, so there is a lower pressure on Earth. The warm air may also evaporate water from the sea and take it up to form clouds, possibly bringing rain.
